Training on Mulbarton Common Saturday's at 9.30am - 10.30am

Wanderers 9 Dereham Wanderers 0

The under eight juggernaut continued its journey towards decision day at Brandon next week when they will play the only other team in their section of the South Norfolk League with a 100% record. Harvey made his first appearance and Bailey kept a clean sheet in the first time he has played an entire match in goal.
The boys were cagey to begin with against a large Dereham side before a mazy run from Jack was ended by a trip in the box and George coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. Josh then set up George to make it two nil at the end of the first quarter.
A new strike force of Harvey & Logan had barely been on the pitch together before Harvey scored a début goal while Logan proved not to be outdone in making it four for Wanderers.
In the second half the boys continued to show slick passing with William, Jack & Henry covering every blade of grass. An unfortunate Dereham defender diverted one of George’s low hard crosses into his own net before Josh grabbed his customary goal for number six.
The final quarter allowed time for three more Wanderers’ goals and a couple against the woodwork. Both man of the match George and Harvey completed hat-tricks.
A big well done to the team for getting to this stage of the season with seven wins from seven. Bring on Brandon!

Wanderers 8 Mundford 1

Sunday presented a new challenge & something to worry about for Brian – dealing with a visit from the media. Becky Betts from Radio Norfolk’s Treasure Quest reached the team at half time with the task of dribbling round some cones and scoring against Damian before Brian could give her the next clue. When this proved too difficult Henry did it for her! Mulbarton Wanderers U8s help Treasure Quest
You can listen to this by going to link and clicking on listen again. Unless you are a big Radio Norfolk fan I suggest you click on the fast forward to 2 hours 30 mins to hear the boys. A picture of the event was taken which should be added to the site later.
The other visitors were Mundford who had a reputation as one of the better teams in the League. They demonstrated some attractive passing but whether it was due to the heavy sodden pitch or the effects of half-term Wanderers proved much too strong for them. In the first quarter George noted the diminutive nature of the goalkeeper and quickly scored two over his head. In the second quarter Jack scored the only goal. Mundford came back strongly in the third, pulling one back before an unfortunate defender deflected a George corner into his own net. In true under 8s fashion George joined the club of boys trying to claim own goals as their own but we can’t let them get away with that! This and the heavy pitch seemed to break the resistance from the visitors; Jack scored again and George added a last quarter hat-trick.
The team was Damian, Cadan, Henry, Josh, Jack, Jamie, Logan and George with George selected as man of the match.

Carrow Cup

Cadan, Henry, Josh, Leo, George, Jack, Damian & Logan formed the group for the under 8’s first tournament at Football in the Community’s October Carrow Cup. Playing at night & under floodlights for the first time there was a palpable sense of excitement in the boys.
First up was a ding dong encounter against Waveney Youth. George put Wanderers one up, Waveney equalised before Josh scored twice to leave Wanderers 3-1 up. It was not to be easy though as Waveney stormed back to 3-3 before an unfortunate own goal clinched the match for Wanderers 4-3.
Next up were Norwich United who the boys overpowered convincingly with a quick Logan hat-trick, a brace from George and another from Josh. So the final score was 6-0 Wanderers.
Now the competition was running under FA rules forbidding competitive football at under 8 so there were no tables to be published but Thorpe Rovers United had also won both their games meaning that the final match was the decider in the group. Whether it was Rovers greater physical size or competitive nature was difficult to tell but Wanderers kept going even though Thorpe ran out 8-0 winners.
Still for the boys it was a very enjoyable evening, they learnt a lot about playing in this sort of competition and will surely be very keen to take part in the next event.

Dereham Wanderers Yellow 0 Wanderers 16

This report has been rigorously fact checked by a crack team of proof readers to eradicate the errors that crept in last week – or alternatively I have read it twice. ;)With Watton withdrawing a young Dereham Wanderers Yellows took their place hosting Wanderers on a tight Astro-turf pitch in the pouring rain. Good practice for the boys ahead of Tuesday’s Carrow Cup.
Logan & Jamie joined the group for the first time but the game had a familiar look as Wanderers proved too strong for their smaller opponents. Josh & a first session hat-trick from George took the first quarter 4-0.Second quarter Jack & Henry opened their accounts and George added another before half time.
After changing ends George added three more to a goal from Jack. Damian in goal was fairly unemployed, while Jamie and Cadan played a full part without managing to get on the score sheet.
In the final quarter Logan grabbed a début goal and George three more before William raced away to score his first goal for the team. Final result was a 16-0 win for Wanderers with George scoring 10 and Jack getting man of the match.

Wanderers 6 Morley 4

Napoleon said he would rather have lucky generals than skilful ones and Wanderers certainly rode their luck at home against Morley. Unveiling their new strip courtesy of sponsors Mulberry Bush Day Nursery with Sam, Bailey, Danny & Miles making their débuts there was an unfamiliar look about the team. Despite a few of the team being visibly under the weather there was nothing unfamiliar around the start though as a nucleus of George, Jack, Henry & William surged into a 3-0 lead with George scoring twice and Jack once. Mulbarton Wanderers U8
The challenge of integrating a squad of 11 while ensuring the team’s ethos of all the boys getting a fair crack of the whip was evident in the second quarter. Morley scored twice and were unlucky on not once but two occasions to strike the post before seeing the ball roll agonisingly along the line before Wanderers cleared.
With the score at 3-2 at half time the resilience the group had shown at Lakenheath kicked in. George extended the lead, Cadan went off with a painful injury & determined goalkeeping from Bailey saw out the quarter.
Nerves frayed in the final quarter as neither side demonstrated they could defend leaving the keepers exposed to deliver their heroics. George scored again, Josh was working hard with no reward, Morley pulled one back and then hit the post for the third time. Jack scrambled Wanderers sixth allowing Morley only time for a late consolation goal.
It said it all that when Morley looked for the man of the match it was a choice between the four keepers - Damian, Miles, William or Bailey before they finally settled on William. So for Wanderers under 8s it is played four won four and also a ground that Brian could find without a sat nav!!

Lakenheath 6 Wanderers 7

The under 8s continued their odyssey round the furthest outposts off the South Norfolk Youth League and Brian’s navigation test with a visit to Lakenheath. At first it was business as usual in the first quarter as first George and then Henry scored to take the first quarter 2-0.
But in the second quarter Lakenheath took advantage of the large number substitutes that both team agreed could be employed a came out much stronger. Wanderers conceded the for the first time as a group and shortly added another new experience as two more quick Lakenheath goals meant they fell behind. Damian, William & Cadan were battling hard which allowed Josh to equalise but couldn’t prevent another Lakenheath goal as Wanderers fell behind again to trail 4-3 at half time.
Heads did seem to drop a little but it is a reflection on the teams character that when faced with the new experience of being behind they came storming back in the third quarter. Henry equalised, George restored Wanderers lead and an unfortunate Lakenheath defender diverted a Henry cross into his own net (which Henry cheekily tried to claim).
Excellent Lakenheath goal keeping in the second half from their man of match was leading to a tight finish in the final quarter. First Lakenheath pulled one back before a deserved goal from Jack restored Wanderers two goal advantage. There was to be no relaxing end to the game though. Lakenheath pulled back to within one goal. It was end to end stuff with Wanderers unable to get past the Lakenheath keeper but doing enough to hold out.
Final score was 7-6 to Wanderers, George was man of the match and the match was in its way more rewarding than last week for the hard fought but friendly nature of the game.

Garboldisham 0 - Wanderers 25 (TWENTY FIVE!!)

As Rhys’s dad said when he found Rhys boots were clean after the match if Carlsberg did football matches they’d all be like this.
The match produced another batch of firsts: The team’s first away game, first game for Rhys & Damian along with first goals for Henry, Jack & Cadan.
Garboldisham showed early season inexperience which allowed Wanderers to start strongly and miss a few chances before they got their shooting boots on. But from the point George opened the scoring there was no stopping them. Josh quickly scored two more and George got a second. Before the end of the quarter both Henry, with two, and Jack scored their first goals for the club. At the break Wanderers had opened a 7-0 lead.
With confidence soaring the second quarter saw George, Josh, Jack & Henry all completing hat-tricks and Cadan scoring his first goal for the team as Wanderers added another six to their total. Much to both teams credit they kept going in what was turning into a one sided contest.
William, Damian & Rhys were all playing their full part but it was man of the match George who grabbed the glory by scoring another hat-trick within the third quarter. Henry added two more and Josh scored his fourth.
Both teams started to visibly tire in the last quarter but Josh showed he was not to be out done by scoring a hat-trick within a quarter while Jack added two more to his total and Henry one.
I hope you were paying attention to a frenetic account of what was a frenetic game. When the dust had settled it was 25-0 to Wanderers with goals from Josh (7), George (6), Henry (6), Jack (5) and Cadan.
Well done to all the team.

Wanderers 5 New Buckenham 0

For Brian this was his first match in charge and for some of the team their first competitive match which meant it was good to get off to a winning start. Wanderers edged the first two quarters and were perhaps fortunate to take both of these 1-0 considering the first goal was a deflected own goal from a corner and NB had a cracking shot against the post that at first the crowd thought was in.
Third quarter was goal less but Wanderers superior fitness told in the last and we perhaps could have scored more than the three we got in the end.
Josh was man of the match for his hat trick and George added the other to the own goal.
Well done all......the team is up and running.

This seasons’ football for the Under 8’s is a non-competitive league but it’s a good opportunity to practice without the pressure. We will be playing another Under 8’s team most weekends so it’s important that you attend the training on Saturday and let me know if you can’t make a match. The fixtures for this term are overleaf but our first match is on this Sunday the 14th September at Home to New Buckenham. So, we will be playing at Mulbarton Junior School and Kick Off will be 10.30am.
We will soon have a new team kit to wear, so watch this space...
